CORK

SCHOOLGIRLS LEAGUE – UNDER 14 Youghal Utd 9 – 1 Car-

rigaline Hibs Sponsored by Apple-

green Cork Hill Match Report by: Jona-

thon Tobin On a

brisk Saturday

morning, the girls arrived to the pitch eager to get the game underway. A big panel means the girls are constantly fighting for positions and making the coaches decisions harder and harder every week. The ever improving Ag- atha stood between the posts with confidence. The Youghal girls pressed early and put Carrigaline under huge pressure right from the get go. Our at- tacking three of Meave, Whitney, and Molly were eager to get on the score sheet. It wasn’t long until their

work rate was rewarded when Meave took a shot which

was stopped in

the box by a Carrigaline hand. Returning from injury Molly was deter- mined to come back to her scoring ways. With confidence she hit the ball with great power to the right of the keeper. The Keeper got down to it but the power proved too much as the ball hit the back of the net. One nil up and the girls looked as determined as ever to not let this game pass them. Our midfield of Ese, Emer, Lorna and captain Blaithin worked tirelessly to deliver the balls to our brilliant attacking players. The next goal came from a beautiful piece of indi- vidual play. Our reliable centre back Tara stopped a Carrigaline attack and Youghal pushed on for a counter attack. Tara drib- bled the ball up the pitch as the Carrigaline players helplessly tried to stop her attack. Tara found herself in front of goal and coolie slotted it into the left cor- ner. The girls weren’t ready

to stop scoring. Blaithin attacked from the left wing and crossed the ball in.

Many Carrigaline players got in the way but couldn’t get the ball passed the fighting Molly. She put in a strong tackle to win the ball just inside the box. With a quick look up, she saw the Carrigaline keep- er off her line and shot over the keeper into the top right hand corner. Carrigaline

tipped off

and were determined to get on the score board. Much of their attack came from the right side but to no avail. Lorna proved hard to beat on the wing. Her work rate was incred- ibly. Jess Kelly didn’t plan on leaving anyone get the better of her and cleaned up everything that came at her with style. Carrigaline changed tactics and tried to penetrate the left side of our defence. They soon realised that this wouldn’t be any easier. The strong Suzanne

wouldn’t let

them through. Suzanne put a beautiful ball up the wing to Blaithin. Blaith took it in her stride and af- ter beating two defenders found herself one on one with the keeper. As cool as a breeze she chipped the charging keeper and the ball sailed into the top left corner. Four nil and the Youghal girls looked like they’d never be stopped. Our bench was strong

and changes were going to be made quickly. First we saw the introduction of Debbie for Molly. Debbie pushed and showed her determination to get into the game. Joanna came on in place of Suzanne and kept the Carrigaline players out. Tara showed her skill and was unlucky on a few occasions not to be rewarded. The score line didn’t do the talented Carrigaline keeper justice. A fantastic clearance re- leased Whitney up the top as she took the ball in her stride and slotted it into the right hand corner. The girls

a comfortable

found themselves in lead with

three minutes till half time but they weren’t finished yet. Again Whitney was at the end of a beautiful delivery and slotted the ball home to make it 6-0 at half time. Carrigaline looked like

a different team at the start of the second half. They pushed on and looked

dangerous in the open- ing minutes. As strong as always Agatha stood be- tween the posts and kept Carrigaline at bay. Min- utes later a brilliant ball behind the Youghal de- fence found a Carrigaline striker who shot low and hard under the arm of the charging Agatha. 6-1 and Carrigaline

looked like

they might claw it back. Five minutes gone and

it was clear we needed fresh legs on the pitch. Abbie replaced Emer in midfield. Our strikers had ran themselves into the ground so Ava and Anna came on with fresh legs and new ideas. Youghal showed their class once more as they got on top of the game again. Abbie worked tirelessly in mid- field to feed the ball to our attackers. Youghal’s pass- ing was crisp and it was clear that we were training well as a team. Ava and Anna linked well together upfront while Lorna cov- ered more ground than anybody on the pitch. It was clear that she wasn’t going to let Carrigaline get away with any coun- ter attacks. Unlucky not to score in the first half she pushed on in search of one of her own. Show- ing how much of a team player she is, she delivered balls behind the Carri- galine

defence for her

team mates to run onto. Ava showed her class with great control of the ball and powerful shots. It looked like it wasn’t going to be Ava’s day as the Car- rigaline

keeper was de-

termined not to concede again but Ava had differ- ent ideas. She shot low and hard into the right hand corner. Back of the net any every supporter for Youghal jumped with joy to see her hard work pay off. Moments later she added to her tally after she shot and the keeper saved but she was there to put home the rebound. Minutes left

to play

and Molly was eager to get more game time af- ter

returning from inju-

ry. She replaced Meave who was a key player in Youghals score line. Molly looked keen to complete her hatrick. A beautiful cross from Blaithin found Continued on next page
