57 Cork GAA Convention - Tracey Kennedy Takes The Helm As History Is Created
Photos by DENIS O’FLYNN
On last Sunday after- noon in Pairc Uí Chaoimh, Killeagh
native Tracey
Kennedy created history as she took over as Chairman of Cork GAA for the next three years. Tracey who is steeped in GAA history succeeds fellow East Cork man Ger Lane who com- pleted his term as Chair- man on Sunday last. As vice-chairman for the
past 3 years, Tracey has been hands on with all the major development
that
has taken place in Pairc Uí Chaoimh and around the county. Taking the reins of the biggest county in the country is certainly a mas- sive task, but one that the Carrigaline, Community School Vice Principal will relish. Previously Tracey held
the position of East Cork GAA secretary as was Cork GAA Pro, where it is read- ily acknowledged that she was quite brilliant in the position. No doubt she will certainly bring a new di- mension to the running of the GAA in Cork, but the future is certainly in a safe pair of hands. Cork holds the highest
number of Munster and All Ireland Titles across all grades, and while success
in recent times has been limited, no stone will be left unturned as the new committee
supports the
selection committees al- ready put in place. Success cannot alone be measured in titles, but with the newly developed Pairc Uí Chao- imh now up and running, the times ahead are hugely exciting for all Cork peo- ple.
Tyrone were the first
county to be led by a fe- male chairperson, and now Tracey Kennedy becomes just the second lady to hold such high office. Cork sec- retary Frank Murphy will continue for another 12 months and that will be a huge help as the exec- utive also has a new vice chairman, treasurer and development officer with another east Cork native, Pat Horgan from Midleton taking up that role. Convention of course is also where
the draws
for the first round of the championships take place and as usual it threw up some mouth-watering ties that will have players back in training early in the New year. This year is no excep-
tion and in the Premier Intermediate
hurling Fr
O’Neill’s will play newly promoted Aghada, while relegated Youghal will
face Castlelyons in anoth- er exciting clash. Cloyne will face Mallow who were last year’s runner up while Watergrasshill have drawn another big gun when they face Ballinhassig. In Senior hurling holders
Imokilly will face Musk- erry in their opening con- test and if
they win here
it will be a clash with CIT or Carberry to get a place in the knockout stages. In the clubs section there is just one all East Cork clash with the meeting of Erin’s Own and Bride Rovers. Killeagh will face Douglas, who they dumped out this year so the city side will be on a revenge mission. For- mer winners Carrigtwohill will face last year’s runner up Blackrock, Sarsfields will meet
Ballyea, while
Midleton will face Bishop- stown.
