December 2017 East Cork Snooker Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) AARON Hill was the
winner of the 2017 ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker As- sociation’ (CBSA) Cork County
U16 snooker
championship, held at Shooters snooker club recently. A field of emerging tal-
ent including Aaron Hill and Sean Walsh were present to play for the Cork title at an immac- ulate Shooters club and many of the players from the local club and the An- thony O’Connor ‘Shoot- ers Academy’ which was great to see, with so many younger players now coming through to com- pete at this level. Hill was seeded num-
ber one and Walsh was seeded number two awaiting some ear- ly round games which included wins for the Crowley brothers Sean Paul
and Leone, plus
there were good wins for Larry Kamantauskas, Jack Newman and Daniel Mulcahy. Hill took on Sean Paul
Crowley in the quarter finals with a very im- pressive 84 break in his opening frame. It wasn’t long before the Crucible player was in the last four as he dominated the sec- ond frame in some style with a 73 break and an astonishing standard of snooker. Meanwhile the number
two seed Sean Walsh was in fine form in his match against Daniel Mulcahy with a 39 break and con- trol of the first frame and
more or less duplicated the opening frame with a controlled win in the sec- ond frame and a place in the last four. Meanwhile
Leone
Crowley took the opener with an excellent pot on the black against Jamie Walsh. In another tight frame the second went all the way to the pink ball with Crowley coming out on top. Jack Newman got the
better of Larry Kaman- tauskas in their opening quarter final match and then went on to win the second frame with col- ours still left on the table and a place in the last four where he met Sean Walsh. Hill was on fire in his
opening two semi-final frames, rattling off a 94 clearance followed
by a dominant win in the second frame and it wasn’t long before Hill was in the final with a convincing performance in the third frame. Walsh won the opening
frame, but had to work for it and Newman showed some fine snooker play in the second frame, but Walsh was just too strong in the end leaving him- self just one frame from a final spot. Walsh was strong in the
third frame knocking in a 53 break and a very sig- nificant lead in the match and in the end was just too good and progressed to meet Aaron Hill in the County final. The final was always
going to be good with Hill holding the Munster U16 and U19 titles and
Walsh Corks U16 and U19 champion. In frame one of the fi-
nal, Walsh trailed by elev- en points on the final red made an excellent break to lead by 14 on the pink and after a series of ex- changes, Hill missed the pink and conceded the opening frame. In a very tense and low
scoring second frame, Hill had to dig deep with a superb pot on a long green and then the brown and after a couple of shots Hill potted an excellent Blue to seal the frame and level the final at one frame all. In a slightly sluggish
third frame Hill came out on top when he pot- ted the important balls at the right time, especially hitting a lovely position- al pot on the Brown and was just one frame from victory. Walsh cut in a tight pink into the
pocket to seal a very im- portant
frame
yellow victory
where he battled hard on the colours to get into a winning position and send the County Final to a deciding frame. In the deciding frame
Hill found his rhythm and knocked in two breaks to win the title, saving his best snooker for last.
