December 2017 Deputy Pat Buckley To Contest Next General Election

Pat Buckley has been selected to contest
the
next general election on behalf of Sinn Féin Cork East. Deputy Buckley was se-
lected uncontested at the party’s convention held in Midleton My Place last Saturday 9 December. The party’s spokesper- son on Mental Health said it was both an hon- our and pleasure to be representing the party in the next general election. It’s widely speculated
the party’s deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald will also run uncontested to supersede Gerry Adams, when he steps down as leader. The Party’s spokesper-
son of Finance Pearse Doherty has already stat- ed he will not be putting
his name forward for the leadership race. Earlier this month,
the new Sinn Féin web- site added to speculation there would be a female leadership North and South, as both Michelle O’Neill and Mary Lou appeared side by side on the site’s main banner. Deputy Buckley who
said he was backing Ms McDonald for leader rejected allegations that party candidates were being selected by com- mittee. “Anybody has a chance
to be nominated. I was asked if I would stand again and I said I would.” “It looks like Mary Lou
will be leading the party, who else would we have leading the party. She is very approachable, will work with anyone. She is well able to take people on and hold people to ac-
count.” When asked if the party
is in turmoil with a series of high profile councillors and senators leaving the
party over the past few month, Mr Buckley said his party were not unlike other parties. However Sinn Féin
received more attention from the media than oth- er political parties. It’s expected Sinn Féin Cork East will finalise
their general election team in the new year when their strategic poli- cy group will select their director of election and
local representative. Deputy Buckley said
the party were expecting an election in March or June next but are ready.
