December 2017 East Cork Soccer Notes Soccer in Midleton CBS Soccer is a sport that has

been growing in Midleton CBS over the past six years. There are now over 120 students involved in soccer in the school, as part of two junior and two senior teams. Our u14 team com- pete in the Munster First Year Cup and Cork Cup, our u15 team in the Mun- ster Minor Cup, our u17 team in the Munster Junior Cup and Cork Cup and our u19 team in the Munster Senior Cup. We have had a number of teams progress to the latter stages of Mun- ster competitions in the last few years and with the continued commitment and passion from players and coaches there may be a title on the horizon. The u19 team have got-

ten off to a fantastic start in the Munster Senior Cup. They finished top of their group, beating four time All-Ireland winners Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh and

Glanmire Community

College. In the first knock- out round they triumphed against a spirited St. Aidan’s Community

College to

qualify for the last 16. Mag- nificent team performanc- es have seen the side score fourteen goals and concede three in the competition so far.

An honourable men-

tion goes to Adam Wilson who is the school’s top goal scorer with five goals.

U17 Squad The u17 team were un-

fortunate to be beaten in the second round of

the

Munster Junior Cup against a very strong Douglas Community School side in tough conditions. After going behind early, goals from Eoghan Martin and Matty O’Reilly put the side back in

dominated for most of the game,

front. The u17s excellent

football throughout, but failed to convert enough of

their chances and Douglas punished them clinically to proceed to the next round. The focus now shifts to the Cork Cup after Christmas and the team are very op- timistic about their chances of having a real impact on the competition. The school’s u15 team

look forward to a Decem- ber meeting with Douglas Community School in the third round of the Munster Minor Cup. They received a bye in the first round to set up an interesting tie with a very well organised Kinsale Community School side in the second. The game was a very tense affair in which neither team could break the deadlock in nor- mal time. The

Midleton

side peppered the Kinsale goal, forcing save after save from the keeper and hitting the woodwork twice. Extra time

prevailed 5-4 after a great full length save from keeper Diarmuid Byrne sent them through. The u14 team began the

Munster First Year Cup with an extremely difficult group stage draw. The first years battled hard against excellent Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig and Douglas Community School sides in their group stage

ties

but unfortunately didn’t do enough to make it out of the group. The squad have since strengthened and look forward to a good run in the Cork Cup after Christmas.

- Match East Cork Athletics Curtin Shines At Euro X Country Championships

by JORDAN MCCARTHY

Ferghal Curtin was the

first Irish athlete home in the Men’s U20 event, at the 2017 Spar European Cross Country Championships last weekend. The Youghal AC run-

ner put in a massive effort, to finish 22nd

overall, just

29 seconds off the winner (Jakob Ingebrigtsen), at the event held in Samorin, Slovakia, on Sunday. Curtin was the first of six Irish run- ners across the finish line in the 6km race – in which the team finished in tenth place overall. It was a day that certainly did bode well for the future of Irish running. Speaking after Curtin’s

superb performance, Chair- man of the East Cork Ath- letics Board, and Curtin’s long-time coach and men- tor, Martin Drake said; ‘‘I was on my knees with pride. This young fellow, I’m very excited about him. I said that a long time ago. He

can run. He has the pack- age. He had the speed work done in South Carolina. He has no fear – he is afraid of no one. Belief is half the battle.’’ Drake was in attendance

for the race in Slovakia, along with Curtin’s parents, Noel and Geraldine, and his sister Trisha. The travelling supporters were impressed by what they saw, as Curtin was up with the lead bunch for the majority of the race, and he crept inside the top ten early on. After a strong injection of pace, a break emerged, and the East Cork native crossed the finish line in 22nd

position, having put

in a very brave effort in the green jersey. ‘‘He did exactly what we

wanted. The only worry I had was the start – Ferghal was in the second row. But, by the time he got down to the opening bend, he was in around 8th

or 9th position.

His last lap was brilliant. Three runners went over the line together and he

only 29 seconds between the first athlete and Ferghal. The most important thing is about getting ready for the big occasion. This Champi- onships was where Ferghal wanted to peak. ‘‘I have to say fair play

to Athletics Ireland. They flew Ferghal over four days before the race. They felt that what he had done in Dublin (4th

for much of the race) was incredible. That meant an awful lot to him. The coach- es

from Athletics Ireland

deserve ten out of ten. They are the best in the world in my eyes. They really looked after the team,’’ Drake said. Curtin, from East Cork,

in the National Championships, having led

is currently doing a scholar- ship in the US. He is back in Ireland for the Christmas period but will return state- side in January, where he has at least three big races to

look forward to in the ear- ly part of the season. And 2018 could be a really excit- ing year for the local athlete, according to the man who has seen him emerge as one of Cork’s most-exciting tal- ents in recent years. ‘‘He’s only in America

with a few months. Give him twelve more months of good sessions and - inju- ry-free with the help of God – it is frightening what he is going to do. That’s what I

am excited about,’’ Drake explained. The final placings of the Irish U20 Men’s Team at the Euro X Country Cham- pionships were as follows; Fearghal Curtin (Youghal) 22nd

, Craig McMeechan (North Down) 37th

, James

Edgar (City of Lisburn) 38th
