Cork County Premier U-21 Hurling Championship
Sarsfields 0-20 Killeagh/Ita’s 1-9
Sarsafields claimed the
Dick Barrett Cup for the first time since 2003 when they had a comfortsble win over fellow East Cork side, Killeagh/Ita’s, in the final of the Cork Co. Premier Under-21 Hurling cham- pionship at a cold Pairc Ui Rinn on Friday night last. Both sides were guilty of some poor wides but the weather and the underfoot
conditions did not allow for free flowing skilful hurl- ing that we associate with this competition. Killeagh/Ita’s were
two points to the good af- ter the first quarter with Sars opening the scoring with two points coming from the influential Jack O Connor as Killeagh/ Ita’s Killian Tracey raised their first white flag of the
evening on nine minutes. Five minutes later Dan Landers caught a beauti- ful pass from Eoghan Ke- niry thirty metres out and on rounding his man gave Colin Looney no chance in the Sarsfields goal for a brilliant goal. Sars didn’t panic and struck the next two points from O’ Con- nor and Aaron Myers, to level the game. Keniry and Myers traded a point each from placed balls and there was nothing between the sides in this opening half. Landers was proving a handful for the Sars de-
fence as he added another point but Sars finished the half stronger due to two further points from Luke Hackett and Myers to go in a point to the good. Myers and Tracey ex-
changed points on the resumption as did Myers and Eoghan Keniry from placed balls to let the status quo stand after six minutes of second half play. Myers and Hackett added a point each as Sars put their op- ponents under pressure. Sars were really dominant as the half progressed with Eoghan Murphy playing a
captains role at full back and senior panellist, Paul Leopold,
outstanding.
Tracey and Dan Landers hit three points on the trot for Killeagh/Ita’s to bring the game back to the min- imum on the 49th
with a great point follow- ing a lovely interception. Scores: Sarsfields; A.
Myers 0-9 (0-7f), J. O Connor 0-6, L. Hackett 0-4, L. Healy 0-1. Scores: Killeagh/Ita’s;
minute
and we were looking for- ward to an exciting closing ten minutes. However Sars sensing danger upped their game and hit a purple patch that returned eight points to a solitary point for Killeagh/Ita’s. Jack O’ Connor was really on fire in this period and Liam Healy showed real class
