Spitsbergen and Polar Bears - An Arctic Adventure (B)
DAY 1: Coal Mining and Arctic nature Your adventure begins with an overnight stay in Longyearbyen, a former coal mining town and exploration starting point. Reminders of the history and her- itage of early miners can be seen everywhere.

DAY 2: Two Very Different Settlements After breakfast, you can take a guided sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen and visit Camp Barentz. We then board MS Nordstjernen and sail up Is- forden to the Russian settlement Barentsburg. This coal mining town has been Russian since 1932, and is still home to about 500 people. See the exotic collection of old Russian artefacts and architec- ture, or soak up local atmosphere in the pub.

DAY 3: Chance to see Polar Bears When Willhelm Barentz first sighted Svalbard in 1596, it was the land in and around Northwest Spitsbergen National Park that he came across. He named it ‘Spitzbergen’ to reflect the sharp, steep mountains. You will see the enormous and fast-moving Monaco Glacier and we may also visit the Jotunkjeldane hot springs, the northernmost documented thermal springs on Earth. If we are lucky, we may spot polar bears, minke whales or bearded seals sunbathing on ice floes.
DAY 4: Fjords, Glaciers and Research Today we cruise into Kongs- forden, the largest ford on the Northwest coast of Spitsbergen. The landscape here varies from large tundra plains to alpine peaks with glaciers tumbling into the sea. At the end of the ford, you

will see the majestic Kongsbreen (King’s Glacier). Later we dock at Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost year-round com- munities and an advanced High Arctic research station.
DAY 5: Cruising Isforden to Longyearbyen Located in central Spitsbergen, Isforden is the most prominent ford system on Svalbard. We spend the morning sailing towards Longyearbyen. Marvel at large U-shaped valleys, carved out of the mountains by giant glaciers. After arriving in Longyearbyen, the rest of the day is yours. There is a farewell dinner at the hotel that evening.
DAY 6: Flying home Your Spitsbergen adventure is over. Transfer to the airport for the flight back home.
