DAY 1: Coal Mining and Arctic Nature Your adventure starts with an overnight stay in Longyearbyen, a former coalmining town that is a prime destination for adventure trav- ellers. Reminders of the history and heritage of early coal miners can be seen everywhere.

DAY 2: Explore Barentsburg After breakfast, you can take a guided sight- seeing tour of Longyearbyen that includes visiting the Camp Barentz. We then board MS Nordstjernen and sail up Isforden to the Russian settlement Barentsburg. This mining town has been Russian since 1932, and is still home to about 500 people. See the exotic collection of old Russian artefacts and architec ture, or soak up real local atmosphere in the local pub.

DAY 3: Magdaleneforden and the NW Corner Locally known as the Northwest Corner, this region is rich with islands, fords and beaches. In Magdaleneford, you’ll discover a whaling station from the 16th century. Watch for polar bears, minke whales and bearded seals.

DAY 4: Polar Bear Sighting When Willhelm Barentz first sighted Svalbard in 1596, it was the land in and around North- west Spitsbergen National Park that he first

saw. He named it ‘Spitzbergen’ to reflect the sharp, steep mountains. We see the enormous and fast-moving Monaco Glacier and may also visit the Jotunkjeldane hot springs, the northernmost documented thermal springs on Earth. If lucky, we may spot a polar bear, minke whales or bearded seals sunbathing on ice floes.

DAY 5: Fjords, Glaciers and Research Today we cruise into Kongsforden, the largest ford on the Northwest coast of Spitsbergen. The landscape here varies from large tundra plains to alpine peaks with glaciers tumbling into the sea. At the end of the ford, you will see the majestic Kongsbreen (King’s Glacier). Later we dock at Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost year-round communities and an advanced High Arctic research station.

DAY 6: Flying Home The Spitsbergen adventure voyage is over and it is time to say goodbye. An early morning transfer bus will take you to the airport for your flight.
