DAY 1: Oslo/Longyearbyen The expedition starts in Oslo, where you can spend the day visiting museums, parks and viewing architecture. Late in the evening we depart on a flight to Longyearbyen, where you spend the night.

DAY 2: Longyearbyen Tour the unique Arctic town of Longyearbyen on your own before lunch, then enjoy a tour of the city and surroundings before boarding MS Spitsbergen. As the ship sails out the Isford, view huge U-shaped valleys carved out of the mountains by giant glaciers that covered the area some 10,000 years ago.

DAY 3: Ny-Ålesund Sailing into the Kongsford, we en-

counter the town of Ny-Ålesund, one of just four permanent settle- ments on Svalbard. Ny-Ålesund was the starting point for many North Pole expeditions and many countries run national research stations here.

DAY 4-7: Exploring Svalbard Cruising north, we focus on the ice edge and attempt to enter fords where landlocked ice is expected. About 3,000 polar bears live on the Svalbard Archipelago, prob- ably the largest concentration on Earth. We will most likely observe these magnificent marine mam- mals from the ship as they make their way through the terrain resting on drift ice or swimming in the sea. We aim to see the Monaco Glacier, and there may be a chance to try glacier traversing.

Exceptional experiences await you “on the ice”, as 60 % of Svalbard is covered by glaciers.

DAY 8: Bjørnøya As we cross the Arctic Ocean and set course for Norway’s mainland, we arrive at Bjørnøya, the southern most island in the Svalbard Archipelago. This isolated outpost hosts one of the largest concentration of sea birds in the Northern Hemisphere. If conditions allow, we will land on Bjørnøya.

DAY 9: North Cape We sail early morning towards the spectacular North Cape cliffs. At Hornvika, we drop off hikers before continuing to Skarsvåg, a small village along the northern coast of the island of Magerøya.

DAY 10: Tromsø Tromsø is called the Gateway to the Arctic, and where your expe- dition ends. When polar explorer Roald Amundsen recruited crew for his famous expeditions more than 100 years ago, he went to Tromsø. The city is still the Gate- way to the Arctic and a natural starting point for expeditions heading north.

We offer one southbound and one northbound expedition. The northbound one has an inversed itinerary without overnight stay in Longyearbyen.
