DAY 1: Oslo/Longyearbyen We start the expedition in Oslo, where you can spend the day seeing museums, parks and archi- tecture. We depart on an evening flight to Longyearbyen.
DAY 2: Longyearbyen After an overnight hotel stay, explore this unique little Arctic town and surrounding area. Longyearbyen is often called an antidote to modern-day life and is a prime destination for adventure travellers. Board MS Spitsbergen.
DAY 3-5: North West Spitsbergen National Park We sail into Kongsforden, con- sidered one of the most beautiful ford regions in Spitsbergen. See mighty glaciers calving icebergs into the sea framed by stunning mountain formations. Cruising northwest, we reach Mitra- halvøya. We visit the former min- ing settle ment of Ny-Ålesund, and aim to see the enormous Monaco Glacier at Liefdeford.
DAY 6-9: Eastern Svalbard Nature Reserves and South Spitsbergen National Park Eastern Svalbard boasts the highest population of polar bears on the archipelago and we really hope to see one! Today we explore Sorgforden, which borders the North East Spitsbergen Nature Reserve. Enjoy the view as we pass the spectacular bird cliffs of Alkefellet. We plan to land on the island of Kvitøya, where relics of the failed Andrée hot-air balloon expedition were found. We also aim to see Edgeøya, Kapp Lee, and Rossøya, less than 1,000 kilo- metres from the North Pole.
We may meet some of Svalbard’s marine mammals as we head towards South Cape Land. Storforden is mainly frozen in winter, making it a perfect polar bear habitat. Ice floes early in the season attract the bears to hunt on drift ice.
DAY 10-11: The Fjords of South- West Spitsbergen Isford is the most prominent ford system in Svalbard and we explore it extensively. The landscape of inner Isford changes constant- ly. Immense U-shaped valleys, carved out of the mountains by the giant glaciers that covered the area 10,000 years ago, are home to large populations of Svalbard Reindeer. Later we might host a farewell barbecue in beautiful Arctic surroundings.
DAY 12: Longyearbyen/Oslo Every good exploration voyage must end. We´ll remember the calving glaciers and buzzing birdlife, or simply the subtle, elated feeling of having been on top of the world. An early morning transfer takes you to the airport for your flight back to Oslo.
