Steak ‘n Shake – an American classic coming to the UK INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £500,000
S
teak ‘n Shake is a classic American restaurant brand, with a strong menu that features premium burgers and shakes. In 1934, Steak ‘n Shake pioneered the
concept of a ‘better burger’ by hand- crafting burgers made with cuts of steak. Steak ’n Shake founder Gus Belt was a pioneer in the American restaurant business. He realised that the burger had caught the public’s taste and what the market needed, Belt reasoned, was a superlative burger. In 1934, Gus opened his first Steak ‘n Shake restaurant in Normal, Illinois. His formula was simple: provide the best quality burger in the business and cook it in sight of the customer. This commitment to quality, delivered right in front of the customer, helped create Steak ‘n Shake’s famous slogan ‘In sight it must be right’. Nearly eight decades later, Steak ‘n Shake is one of the most recognised and loyalty-inspiring brands in the restaurant business, with more than 114 million steakburgers and over 66 million shakes served annually.

source, slice, grind, and create the highest- calibre ingredients available and continue to serve customers a fresh, quality product. In 2008, when Sardar Biglari took over Steak ‘n Shake, he injected verve into the company with his strategy to become a global brand. Under the ownership of his holding company, Biglari Holdings, Steak ‘n Shake has offered one of the best performances in the restaurant industry over the past five years, with close to 40 per cent cumulative growth in customer traffic. New menu items have been added, such as the premium, handcrafted organic steakburgers. In addition, they have designed a new shake bar – a sleek, elegant, modern apparatus to serve shakes. The aesthetics of the new restaurant make it inviting and it has also helped Steak ‘n Shake’s expansion in the United States as well as abroad. Sardar’s commitment to Steak ‘n Shake and its franchise owners is unprecedented – Biglari Holdings have no intention to sell Steak ’n Shake, a commitment verified in writing in its franchise agreement. This is a fresh approach in an industry in which most restaurant chains frequently change hands thereby hamstringing a restaurant’s organisation and performance. Biglari
Holdings’ long-term ownership strategy will ensure that Steak ‘n Shake, the oldest brand name in the premium burger and milkshake area of the food sector, is optimally positioned to be a market leader in both product quality and design, as well as in financial sustainability for its owners. Steak ‘n Shake have over 500 outlets in the US and are actively looking for franchise partners to be part of the successful UK expansion programme. They are seeking individuals, partners and businesses with a minimum of circa £500,000 in liquid capital to own and operate their first Steak ’n Shake outlet with a view to opening in multiple locations.
