An insight into the Granite Transformations multicoloured stock shop INVESTMENT LEVEL: £25,000

H

ome improvements franchise Granite Transformations (GT) set up in business 18 years ago, offering a single core worktop

product in just six colours, under the banner ‘the top that fits on top’. A million worktop installations later, the showroom stock lines have grown to hundreds – thousands even – of product lines in a multitude of colours worldwide. Here’s a run-down of the multicoloured stock options that today’s GT franchise owners have to draw upon in order to build up their showroom sales, as well as some idea of how each new retail offering came about.

Granite worktops – The original thin agglomerate worktops made in Italy by Trend, offering superior performance to natural stone, could be overlaid on existing countertops. The composite construction was comprised of granite granules bonded together with high-tech polyester resin for outstanding strength and resilience, although this was later supplemented by quartz surfaces with finer, neutral finishes.

Recycled materials – Later acquiring the GT franchise, the Trend group pioneered the use of recycled raw materials in finishing surfaces and Granite Transformations added recycled glass to the worktops range. Made from colour-sorted recyclable material such as used water and beer and wine bottles, this technique added an interesting underlying texture to the diamond polished agglomerate, with tinted resins used to produce some flamboyant colours.

“Prospective GT franchisees will have a sound platform for business growth”

Kitchen splashbacks – The slim, lightweight nature of GT work surfaces enabled full-height splashbacks and neat upstands to be installed in the same material. To maintain the franchise’s market reputation for fast, hassle-free

makeovers, Trend later developed glass mosaic tile splashbacks on a polyurethane mattress backing, in exclusive patterns to complement Granite Transformations worktop colours.

Replacement doors – As a natural partner to kitchen worktop overlays, Granite Transformations diversified into replacement cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Enabling existing cabinet carcasses, working layouts, plumbing and wiring to be retained, replacement worktops and doors gave that new-kitchen look and feel for a fraction of the cost. Timbergrain, high gloss vinyl, metallic and matt finishes further extended the colour choice.

Hard flooring – Trend’s granite agglomerate material was originally used for low-maintenance, high-performance floor tiles and the expanding colour palette allowed GT franchisees to offer customers an attractive domestic flooring solution. Market trends moving away from resilient vinyls and linoleum and towards continental- style hard floors added to the market potential, while an innovative tile laying system made installation faster and easier.
