The British Franchise Association (bfa) was established in 1977. Its aim is to promote ethical franchising practice and to help potential franchisees recognise the good franchises and the not-so-good. The association has a standards-based approach to membership and franchisors wishing to join have to meet a specific set of criteria in order to establish that their franchise represents a fair and ethical opportunity. The bfa is renowned for its standards in franchising across the globe: it was a founder member of the World Franchise Council, admitted franchisees as members from 2012 and its director general, Brian Smart, takes part in discussions at an EU and UN level.
