What challenges have you faced so far running the busness?
Our biggest challenge is finding the right people for the business; it takes extraordinary people to do it really well and they are hard to find.

ohn James was a police officer with Hampshire Constabulary for 25 years and then spent the next seven working as international sales director selling enterprise software to large police agencies in the UK, North America and Australia. With the support of his wife Alison, John opened the Home Instead Senior Care franchise in Fareham in February 2014 and hasn’t looked back.
What was it about the care sector that interested you? It seems odd but there are interesting parallels between policing and care. They are vocations and professions, and at the heart of both should be a highly developed sense of service to others, integrity and putting others first. I looked at a wide range of franchise opportunities before settling on the care sector; it was the right fit for me and I knew I could approach it with the same passion I had with policing.
Why did you choose Home Instead? I looked at a number of care franchises but I was intrigued by Home Instead – the difference in their approach, the language they used and the way they engaged with prospective franchisees completely convinced me that this

was the only option for me! They so clearly reflected the values they espouse; they talked about quality not cash, about building a business for the long term not for a quick return, about changing the way providers could and should operate in the sector, about being thought-leaders not followers and professionalising the carer role. It was compelling and so transparently authentic that I knew as I drove home that if I was going to do anything in franchising it should be with them.

What training and support do you receive?
I had support right from the moment I made contact with Home Instead. They helped me understand the sector and the competitive landscape in my initial research phase, they had a rigorous process of selection and I was able to speak with as many existing franchisees
Would you recommend franchising to others? Without question! I had always wanted to do something for myself and franchising was the obvious route. Having a proven business model, brand awareness and brand value are huge benefits. The support of a franchisor that knows the sector, has good business mentoring support and continues to build competitive advantage is invaluable.
What has been your greatest achievement so far? The feedback we’ve had from clients who have been close to desperation and then found that we could help them is just priceless. The personal satisfaction is immeasurable and equals any feeling of personal job satisfaction I had in 25 years of policing.
