76 Module 5 • Lubrication Hand pump (manual and automated)
As with lubricating oils, grease can be supplied under pressure from a central reservoir, by means of a hand operated or motor-driven pump (see figures below) to various supply points in the mechanical system. Many modern day buses and trucks are equipped with computerised chassis lubrication which provides grease to the suspension and steering linkages.

Te function of a hand pump is to deliver oil to the supply points by a machine operator as required daily and needs very little skill. Sight gauges and dip sticks are generally fitted to indicate the correct depth or level in tanks or reservoirs. Care must be taken when topping up the reservoir or tanks that no over- filling occurs or that dirt does not enter the system during the topping up process.
