Unprotected cables Unprotected cables should be suspended well out of reach ormounted so that they cannot be damaged or dislodged accidently. No effort should be spared in preventing them from being disturbed or shorted out.
Boilers Te inspection and testing of boilers
• All boilers shall be regularly tested and checked for defects at intervals of less than a year.
• Safety valves must not be tampered with in any way. Tere may not be alterations or modifications made, weights added or adjustments made by any person other than the manufacturers and in such a case the safety engineer of the mine must be informed.
First aid rescue brigades and first aid certificates All mines are obliged to train both proto and first aid teams to the highest possible level.
L Law
At every mine where there are more than 300 workers, all people under the age of 50 years old, who are in charge of workers involved in the working of the mine, who are employed above the surface where machinery is operated, should within their first year of employment obtain a valid, recognised first aid certificate. Tese certificates shall be renewed every three years.
Accidents and enquiries
• Place of accident should be leſt undisturbed. • In a case where a death has occurred as a result of a serious accident, the site must be cordoned off and leſt totally undisturbed until the scene has been thoroughly investigated by the authorities.
• Permissionmay be obtained fromthe Director General to clear the scene under certain conditions such as:
− when it is unavoidable to prevent further accidents − to remove the injured person so that they can receive medical help
− to remove corpses to reach other injured people or to access the cause of the accident
− should the scene be in a busy throughfare which is the only way in or out and which would therefore seriously upset the workings of the mine.
• Work may resume three days aſter reporting the accident.
