In a hydraulic system, flow is usually produced by the action of a hydraulic pump, a device used to push continuously on the hydraulic fluid. Flow rate is the measure of the volume of liquid which passes a specific point in the hydraulic system in a given unit of time Flow rate determines the speed at which the load moves and therefore is important for the consideration of power.

Volume: It is usually measured in liters per second (,/s). Flow rate = time = liters/min
Area
If a fluid flows through a pipe of varying diameters, at any particular time the same volume would flow to all points. Tis means that the velocity of liquid flow or flow rate must increase at a narrow point. 16.3 Functions of hydraulic fluid
Any hydraulic fluid is non-compressible and will therefore transmit power directly into a hydraulic system. Te word ‘hydraulic’ comes from the Greek ‘hydor’ meaning ‘water’ and ‘aulos’ meaning ‘pipe’. Brahmah’s first hydraulic press and even some presses today use water as the transmitting medium. Te most common hydraulic fluid used today in hydraulic systems is petroleum based hydraulic oil.
Te main functions of hydraulic oil can be described as: • Oil transmits power readily because it is very slightly compressible.
• Te most desirable property of hydraulic oil is its lubricating ability. Te hydraulic oil must lubricate most of the moving parts of the system.
