104 Module 8 • Water pipe systems (up to 50 mm diameter) 8.8 Materials used to seal threaded pipe joints
Te old fashioned method of using sisal string wound into the threads of steel pipes still works, it is just not as quick and easy as using PVC tape. Using a liquid copper jointing compound is another option. Teflon is another option for pipe joints.
Exercise 8.1
1. Name and sketch the connecting piece you would use to turn a pipe line at right angles.
2. Name the fitting to use when two pipes, not of the same diameter, are to be connected and they both have threads on the outside.
3. Describe the conditions under which only a pipe union could join two pipes.
4. What are the two main differences between thermoplastic and thermoset plastic parts or pipes?
5. Give three advantages and then two disadvantages of plastic pipes as compared to steel pipes.
6. What are the main reasons for using a pipe cutter rather than a saw? 7. What is the reason for using a pipe reamer?
