Crossheads are used to reduce wear on the sides of the cylinder which would be caused by oscillation if normal connecting rods without crossheads were used. Te piston pushes straight to the crosshead then a second connecting rod swings back and forth with the crankshaſt.

An important part of a compressor is the valves that let the air in and aſter compression, discharge it. Below are a few examples. Figure 10.10(a) shows poppet valves. Te valve shown in Figure 10.10(b) is a feather valve, common in compressors.
