Special safety measures • Places like pits for working under large vehicles are dangerous, when there is no vehicle over the pit. Trap-doors in the floor to reach storage areas below ground level and any other similar places must be fenced off to prevent access to all but those aware of the dangers and in possession of written authority to enter the area.
• Employees shall not trespass beyond safety fences or guards unless the nature of the work absolutely necessitates it. Should the employee have the necessary permission, he should still only enter such an area if necessary to prevent injury to another worker. He must immediately report this incident.
• Suitable, effective fencing of machinery that is dangerous when in motion.
• Loose clothing: All workers must be aware that wearing loose clothing near moving, especially rotating machinery like lathes, is not allowed.
Repairing and oiling machinery while in motion
Where no automatic oiling device is supplied but oiling is required, an unusual circumstance occurs and may only be attended to by personnel specially trained and authorised to do such work no one else.
Shiſting drive belts
Drive belts on fixed pulleys shall under no circumstances bemoved or changed when in motion. In the case of fast-and-loose pulleys, special belt moving equipment is installed and the belt can be safely moved to a free pulley, disengaged and the drive temporarily neutralised. Te belt can then be safely moved back when ready.
Special safety measures to apply to protect people when doing repairs and maintenance
• Operators of machinery must take all possible precautions to ensure that no other person is working on a machine before switching it on.
• All reasonable precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of maintenance workers.
• Every safety appliance or device shall be maintained in the best possible working condition and only used for the purpose for which it was designed.
• During the repair andmaintenance ofmachinery, the person in charge of the operation shall ensure that the power supply to the machine is cut off and locked in the off position. Tis must be done in accordance with the safety code drawn up by the Engineer holding a ticket of competency and appointed to this post.
• Te power must remain off until the maintenance work is completed.
