12 Module 1 • Occupational Health and Safety (Act No. 85 of 1993)
Te possible cause of an accident caused by a worker who did not consider his fellow workers when he acted
Te other major contributing factor in many accidents is unsafe working conditions.
A few examples of unsafe conditions are: • insufficient lighting in the working area to the degree that the worker cannot clearly see what he or she is doing
• insufficient ventilation especially where welding, grinding, testing of petrol or diesel engines or where work with chemicals is carried out
• working in an area where construction is carried out
• working in an area where the floor is particularly unsafe because it is unstable, cracked, full of holes, weakened by rotten floor boarding or wet with especially oily liquids
• badly planned workshop layout
• workshop that is crowded and in a mess with piles of material and or equipment in thoroughfares and working areas
• blocked or unclearly marked emergency exits • a lack of suitable machine guards and guard rails.
