Bronze used for bearings consistsmostly of copper with lead, tin and either zinc, aluminum or phosphorus added. Te tin and aluminum add strength and load sustaining properties to the alloy, while the lead reduces the chance of seizure when lubrication becomes minimal and improves the bearing’s ability to absorb impurities without them becoming a problem.


Phosphorus reduces the friction factor and raises melting temperature making it suitable for a wide range of industrial, slow rotating machines like power-saws, cranes, conveyor belt drives and more.


White metal


White metal is the most common of plain bearing liner covering metals. Option 1: A tin based alloy, made of roughly 80% tin, ±10% copper and about 10% antimony. Option 2: A lead base with varying percentage combinations of about 10% tin and 10% to 15% antimony.


White metal works well with hardened steel journals and absorbs any impurities quickly and easily thus preventing damage to the journals. It is commonly used in internal combustion engines for both big-end and small-end bearings.


Nylon


Nylon is a good bearing material as it has a low coefficient of friction, it is tough, requires little or no lubrication, is easily machined, corrosion resistant and is able to absorb low intensity shocks.


Te properties of nylon make it suitable for use as suspension bushings, electrically adjustable seats, hospital beds, office furniture.


Teflon


Teflon has an unusually low coefficient of friction, is corrosion resistant, needs no lubrication, can handle a wide range of operating temperatures and can be compounded with other elements to enhance certain desirable properties to make it more versatile.


Teflon is used between sliding surfaces as well as in bushes for hand power tools, power toys and light machinery.


When plain bearings are used in places like the main and journal bearings of motor car engines where they are subject to enormous loads at high speeds and temperatures, full lubrication is required.
