N2 Fitting and Machining Theory|Hands-On! 153 13.9 Types of chains
Single and multiple-strand roller chains Roller chains operate like a series of sliding bearings, the bushing pivot on the pins and the rollers rotate on the bushings, causing smooth operation. As can be seen in the section on chain pitch above, a single pitch chain carries a smaller load than a double pitch chain, but is less noisy and operates more smoothly. A double-pitch roller chain is also lighter and less costly than a single-pitch chain.

A multiple-strand roller chain is used to transfer maximum power with the smallest pitch size. The use of themultiple-strand chain with a small pitch at high speeds will ensure the chain and sprockets operated more smoothly and had a longer life.
