Pedestal bearings are also often fitted with solid bronze bushes, with or without thrust collars or thrust washers. Pedestal bearings are oſten found outside where they are subject to the elements and have no protection. Extractor fans, heavy automatic gates, windmills, water pumps and the like are examples of their use.
Pedestal bearings fitted with solid bearings and collars for end thrust are also quite common especially on slow moving equipment like a wheelbarrow where side thrust must also be catered for.
Plain split bearing
Plain split bearings are very common, especially in places where a solid bearing would be very difficult to fit, like in a crankshaſt big-end. In cases like the crankshaſt where high speed, big shock loads and end thrust are encountered all the time, a very special split, plain bearing is required.
Te bearing is usually made up of a combination of a steel backing plate covered with a layer of white metal. It has an oil hole and groove, supplied with an unbroken supply of high pressure oil to keep the two bearing faces apart. Te oil flow helps with heat transfer, shock absorption and many other functions dealt with under lubrication. Trust washers are fitted to the engine block adjacent to the bearings to prevent axial movement especially at times like when the clutch is pushed in.

When this type of bearing wears out replacement kits are available. Only the bearing liner is replaced which can be bought off the shelf. Te liners of this type of bearing can be recast in or out of the housing.

Plumber block bearings, unlike pedestal bearings, usually consist of a two-piece housing – a base and a cap. A split plain bearing liner is fitted inside. Tese bearings are usually lubricated although not usually by a pump pressure type feed, but by a sight feed lubricator, siphon wick or needle, slow feed type systems or a spring loaded grease cup.

Tis type of bearing is oſten found on either side of a pulley on the shaſt carrying the pulley. Tey are simply mounted on a frame or housing where they can easily be set up and aligned. Te cap of the bearing can easily be removed by simply removing the two bolts holding the cap down and liſting the cap up. Te top half of the bearing liner will usually liſt up with the cap as it is removed.
