Tere is another method known as the taper turning attachment method. Tis will not be discussed as most machines are not fitted with this attachment.
17.6 Calculating how much to set over the tailstock to cut a given taper
Example 17.1 Let us say you want cut a 10° taper on a 400 mm shaſt between centres.
Solution Tan 10
2 ° = setover length
Set over = Tan 5° × length = 0,0875 × 400 = 34,995 mm
If, however, you wanted to cut a 10° taper on a 258 mm workpiece but you placed it on a 400 mm mandrel, you would get the same answer because ‘length’ is the distance between centres, not the length of the taper.
Example 17.2 In this example you are not given the angle but the two final diameters required.
Calculate the amount of tailstock set over required when the final large diameter must be 300 mm and the small diameter 250 mm. Te workpiece is 450 mm long and between centres (the length of the mandrel) is 500 mm.
