To compress air succesfully, the air entering the compressor has to be clean and free of dust particles or any foreign objects. Tis is where the air filter comes in. Air filters come in a variety of shapes and sizes as shown in Figure 10.17. A water seperator is shown in Figure 10.18. Tis is a must on any hard working air line to keep the air dry.

Every compressor must have at least one safety valve that is calibrated to open the switch on the electric motor and turn it off should the required pressure be exceeded. Should the pressure in the receiver approach the prescribed safe maximum, and not be switched off, a second safety valve will open and allow the pressure to be released into the atmosphere.
