Figure 2.1(a) and (b) are examples of typical workshops from that era. Long shaſts are still used nowadays in certain sectors, but the modern tendency is to join a number of shorter shaſts to make up the required length of shaſting. Te shorter shaſts are joined with couplings.

Te main function of couplings is to join two shaſts together or to provide a mode of conveying or transmitting power from a drive source to a machine. A coupling can, for example, connect a steam turbine to an alternator or an electric motor to a pump. By means of a coupling machine, components, are tightly coupled and cannot be easily disengaged. Both components cannot therefore be uncoupled while there is movement.
