Bearings must be cleaned internally at regular intervals to remove dirt and grit which penetrates the working surfaces. Te bearing can be cleaned by hand using a brush to apply diesel fuel or pure paraffin if space is limited.
A bearing cleaner may be used. Tis is a device consisting of a sealed container that clips over the bearing. Te container is half full of cleaning fluid. Tere are numerous rotating brushes inside that brush the surfaces that they can reach while spraying the cleaning fluid into the bearing at speed. If possible the bearing should be kept rotating while it is cleaned.
4.12 Different bearings for different loads
• Radial loads are the type of loads experienced by big-end and journal bearings in a petrol or diesel engine, the load is at 90º to the shaſt. Trust bearings are used to take care of the load that is parallel to the shaſt, preventing it from moving the shaſt out of alignment.
• An angular load is a compound load that is partially radial and partially thrust, requiring either a bearing especially designed to handle the combined loads or a combination of a radial bearing and a thrust bearing.
4.13 Advantages and disadvantages of anti-friction bearings
Te advantages of anti-friction bearings are: • Te bearings can be pre-packed with grease, sealed and mounted outside where a constant flow of clean oil is available and little regular maintenance is available.
• Tey do not just suddenly break down, they make warning noises which become louder as the state of the bearing gets worse.
• Tey are more suitable in gear boxes as they have less starting resistance and do not have to build up oil pressure before they become fully efficient.
• Tey can run under overloads and without lubrication for short periods without damage occurring.
Te disadvantages of anti-friction bearings are: • Tey cannot be fitted to average, normal, one piece crank-shaſts or cam-shaſts.
• Tey are noisier than plain bearings especially at constant high speeds like in motor car engines.
• Unlike plain bearings, they should be replaced when they no longer work. • Te initial cost outlay is usually much higher.
