Anti-friction bearings do not normally depend on pressure feed lubrication like plain bearings and are oſten pre-packed with grease and sealed as with wheel bearings and applications where there is no access to pumped oil. In gearboxes and differentials they are semi-submerged in oil or splash fed and the lubricant merely flows over them, cooling and cleaning them at the same time. Tis type of bearing can operate at both high and low revolutions with varying loads.
If the anticipated load on the ball bearing is partially axial or to the side, as well as radial, then a deep grooved bearing would be used when the load is lighter or entirely radial then a shallower groove would be used as it produces less friction.
Te only maintenance they require is regular inspection and sufficient, clean lubricant of good viscosity. Te lubricant should be replaced and the bearing cleaned at regular intervals as the lubricant picks up impurities during normal operation. Te regularity of these changes will depend upon the environment where the particular bearing works. Anti-friction bearings make warning noises when they come to the end of their lifespan. Te warning noises get worse as the bearing deteriorates. Te list of places where they can be used is endless.
Installation of anti-friction bearings
Bearings must be correctly fitted from the word go or they will not last the expected life time and may not perform properly even for a short time. Te lubricant type and the amount used from the start is very important. Oil seals are commonly fitted in tandem with the bearing or the bearing itself is sealed to prevent the lubricant leaking out or impurities from entering.
• Check that the bearing and all the other components to be fitted are clean and suitable for the job.
• Check the housing, shaft and bearing for size to ensure that the tolerances are correct for the type of fit required.
• Make sure the area in which you are working is clean and at room temperature (20º) to make it easier to be able to stick to the required tolerances.
If the required fit on the shaſt is a shrink fit then the bearing should be placed in an oil bath which is heated to the prescribed temperature for that particular fit while the shaſt is cooled in a fridge. When they are both ready, check that they are the right way round then quickly but very carefully place them in position. Te heating of the inner race of the bearing can also be done by placing it on top of an old fashioned electric light bulb.
In the case of a press fit, the shaſt should be set up vertically in the hydraulic press. Te bearing should be placed over it, then a sleeve that has been made to fit neatly so that it
