FITTING AND MACHINING THEORY MODULE 19 Milling machine Learning Objectives
On completion of this module the student will be able to: • State the function and uses of dividing heads
• Identify the following components from a drawing provided of a dividing head and explain their function: − Te index plate − Te crank handle − Te adjustable plunger (index pin) − Te sector arms.
• State the purpose and give a description of the following types of indexing − rapid − simple − angular and − differential indexing.
• Calculate the following indexing with practical applications, for example: − 6 divisions − 12 divisions − 40° 15’ − 139 divisions.
• Identify from drawings provided and briefly describe the uses of the following milling cutters:
− plain helical slab milling cutter − side and face cutter − end mill − slot drill − slotting cutter.
• State the reasons for the use of a smallest diameter milling cutter and nicked helical cutter.
• State the advantages of coarse toothed milling cutters. • Indicate the angles on milling cutters by means of line drawings provided: − primary clearance
