17.10 Programming
• Absolute programming: Tis makes use of absolute dimensions with all points of reference being taken from a common point.
• Incremental programming: Tis is done by taking the distance from one point to the next on the workpiece, not from a common point.
17.11 The basic principles of programming a computer controlled lathe
Once a final, dimensioned drawing is available to the program writer will write an instructional program in code form of how the machining will progress. Tis contains the following operations:
• Te location of each operation in co-ordinate format. • Te sequence of operations and the selection of tools. • Cutting speeds and feed rates and the length and depth of cuts. • When and where to apply cutting fluid, how much and for how long.
Once the above have been completed, the technician will feed the information into a localised CPU. Another technician will set up the workpiece and cutting tools and determine the central reference point.
