Forces to franchising

gas-elec franchisee, Greg Adams, talks about life in the industry after leaving the Navy

INVESTMENT LEVEL: £16,500

Forces in the world of franchising – he didn’t need to. As soon as he left the high seas, Greg was off ered a job as an electrical engineer at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. After that, he worked as a sealed service engineer for a private company, then for another fi rm in Cheltenham. It was at this point that Greg started to

reassess his career. He loved the electrical side of his job, but offi ce politics at the Cheltenham fi rm were getting him down. When the off er of redundancy was made, he didn’t hesitate.

hen Greg Adams left the Navy in 1989, aged 30, he didn’t think about using the electrical skills he’d acquired in the

as an electrical engineer, joining the tier of franchisees who compliment the work of the company’s gas engineers. Greg said: “It was slightly nerve-wracking. I had this nice lump sum from my redundancy and I wanted a return on my money as soon as possible.”

This took about two years, but in the following eight, Greg’s business has gone from strength to strength. He credits his success to what he describes as a “pro-active” attitude, realistic goals and a willingness to promote his business. “Although around 65 per cent of my jobs are national accounts and the regional management, franchisees do the sales and marketing for the engineers, I never rest on my laurels,” said Greg. Neither does his franchisor. In addition, to gas and electrical safety inspections, boiler installations and attendant remedial works, gas-elec’s franchisees can also supply and fi t CO and smoke alarms, and carry out legionella risk assessments and EPCs, among other services.

Two years previously, he’d seen an online advertisement for gas-elec, the nation’s premier gas and electrical safety inspection company, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Now, he decided, was the time to take the plunge and join its nationwide team of engineers
