ChipsAway Ross McKenzie

Ross joined ChipsAway in 2010 aged just 23. Working as a BT phone engineer managing twenty- two people, he was offered a very reasonable voluntary redundancy package, which help fund the franchise investment cost.

Why did you choose a business in the automotive sector, and why ChipsAway in particular?

I’ve always loved cars – having owned a BMW M3, Audi RS4, and a classic BMW M3 Evolution, to name a few – and I’m quite a practical person anyway so I think that helped. But to be honest, I ‘stumbled’ across the ChipsAway franchise opportunity when I was looking for someone to repair my pride and joy, and was just so impressed!

for your business. This doesn’t mean, however, your franchise can’t expand. After you acquire regular customers, managing a fleet and team members from an office can be an option, too. Here, three franchisees explain why they decided to invest in the automotive sector and their success since taking control of the wheel…

How has business been so far? During my first launch weekend we managed to estimate around £5,000 worth of work and book in approximately £3,500 – which kept me nice and busy for the first six weeks or so!

Since then I’ve gone on to substantially develop my ChipsAway business. In 2013

I decided the time was right to invest in another van and employee, and more recently I’ve opened a ChipsAway CarCare Centre (fixed-base workshop), which will allow me to process even more vehicles.

How have you found the training and support from the franchisor? The trainers at ChipsAway, which is part of the larger Franchise Brands Worldwide group, are fantastic teachers and really supportive. My business mentor, who was with me for my promotions, as well as at the end of the phone should I need some advice or guidance, is also brilliant.

What challenges have you faced? Being too busy! To be honest, I think we might have already outgrown this premises! I’ve recently secured work with four more local car dealers, which is great, but if things keep going the way they are we could need to move to an even larger CarCare Centre sooner than originally planned!

What advice would you give potential franchisees? You can’t beat self-employment. As long as you’re realistic about what you can achieve, you can’t go wrong!
