and encouraging users to move to Base24-eps. A breakthrough in Central America came in the second half of 2011 when Panama’s largest payments processor, Telered, selected SmartVista. Telered ran ATM acquiring, processing, clearing and settlement services for 42 financial institutions in Panama. It is also the scheme manager for Clave, the country’s national debit card programme. BPC was recruited to install the Smartswitch routing and authorisation engine and SmartATM components of SmartVista to support transaction processing and ATM network service and monitoring. Go-live was expected in October 2012, once the new platform was certified by Visa and MasterCard, said Ramiro Wong, CEO at Telered. The certification covers the EMV chip-and-pin cards, both for receiving and acquiring. EMV is a new initiative for the region, which still widely uses magnetic stripe cards, observed Wong, and once the certification went through ‘Panama will be the fourth country in the region to receive this, ahead of the US’. After the go-live, Telered intended to modernise the interfaces to banks, ‘to fully take advantage of new functionality and technology’, said Wong. Further planned SmartVista projects would encompass support for POS acquisition and management, integration to internet banking services, utility bill payments, fraud prevention, mobile commerce and cash management across the ATM network. The previous year, Telered celebrated its 20th anniversary and introduced a new development strategy, which included enterprise-wide IT modernisation. Telered was running a legacy Cobol-based platform from ACI Worldwide. The system was posing difficulties in introducing new products, complying with Visa and MasterCard requirements as well as keeping up with ever expanding PSI DSS regulations, and finding specialists to maintain it, said Wong. EMV chip-and-pin cards would require modern technologies, he added. The company recruited Ernst & Young to provide selection methodology. An RFP was sent to 18 vendors. The list was narrowed to six and then to four, which were invited to visit Telered for an in-house demonstration. ACI’s newer software was considered, said Wong, but the vendor did not make it to the final, as it declined to provide an in-house demo (instead, ACI offered Telered to visit one of its customers to see how the system works). The finalists, which comprised Alaric, BPC, Postilion (part of S1 Corporation) and FIS, spent a week at Telered running scripts prepared by the processor. BPC, in Wong’s view, ‘came with all the solutions and answers’, demonstrating ‘fair and square’ that they had a proven track-record and adequate resources, and that SmartVista could deliver modern technology, compliance and fast time-to-market for new products. ‘One major concern’ was BPC’s remoteness from Panama. To address this, BPC put together a small support team locally. Modifications were being kept to the minimum, said Wong. Telered was going through a business process optimisation, to adapt to SmartVista and to retire legacy processes. As an example, he cited improvements on the reporting side: 164 reports were being reduced to 60, due to the transition from flat files in Cobol to an Oracle platform. ‘At the same time, it will enable us to expand services, such as offering more personalised reports available on-demand,’ he added. The final stages of Telerad’s project were completed in the second half of 2013, across 1500 ATMs and 30,000 POS.


Africa


Around the same time as Telered was recruited, BPC also signed a customer in Africa, with Consolidated Bank of Kenya selecting the full SmartVista suite to support its payments business. The bank had previously outsourced its cards business but now had plans to offer Visa and MasterCard, EMV and prepaid cards as well as its new ‘Agency Banking’ service to remote rural communities via POS terminals at local stores and retailers. For the latter service, Consolidated Bank had opted for the SmartMerchant application which would support merchant and terminal set-up, clearing and settlement, billing, statements, invoice and report generation and delivery. The bank would also deploy the vendor’s SmartGuard fraud prevention solution and SmartLoyalty loyalty scheme solution. BPC’s local partner, Tracom Services, assisted in gaining the deal.


Recent sales


In November 2016, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) chose SmartVista technology including; SmartSwitch and SmartATM to enhance their offering to their customers. In September 2017, Bahrain based International Payment Services B.S.C selected SmartVista platform for core business activities that involve formulating electronic payment solutions for various businesses, ensuring high standards and a competitive price, managing all its services of credit and debit card issuing and ATM acquiring business as part of a single-platform solution. In December 2017, LienVietPostBank (LVPB) migrated MasterCard credit, debit and prepaid card products as well as local


NAPAS debit card from its legacy Electra System to the SmartVista platform. The turnkey project included connecting all of the banks’ existing ATMs and integrating with the Flex Cube core banking system and all other channels like IVR, call center, internet and mobile banking system.
