In addition Alaric offers a design consultancy service for customers who prefer that route. For those who are less independent-minded, Alaric offers an Application Management Service which combines daily system health-checks with a pre-paid budget to maintain existing and add new interfaces and message formats. Relevant additional systems offered: Fractals - an intelligent fraud detection and prevention framework suitable for card issuers, acquirers, payments processors, PSPs and on-line merchants. Proprietary mathematical models enable illegal transactions to be detected and stopped before a transaction is completed. The Fractals Rules Engine enables fraud analysts to create and deploy fraud detection rules within minutes. NCR is fully integrated within the CxBanking portfolio which is organized around the key activities that happen within consumer facing digital and physical channels.
Strategy
Seemingly of more use has been the strategy to work with regional partners. Alaric has worked with these in central America (Mexico-based Stratus Technologies), Middle East (3SC), Indonesia (GSK), Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Slovenia (EPTA), and Venezuela (Grupo Ingedigit). As is usual with partnerships, not all have brought results and some have fallen by the wayside. As mentioned, EFT, prepaid and money transfer specialist, Euronet Worldwide Inc, is a distributor for Fractals. In the past, Alaric had at least one joint bid with Clear2Pay, ahead of the Belgian supplier moving into the retail payments space, particularly with the acquisition of Jware Technologies. Alaric has also partnered with Logica (now CGI) for Faster Payments in the UK, albeit with no success, and Accenture. In early 2013, Alaric was in discussions with potential partners in Chile and Colombia.
As mentioned, it set about tying up with the regional distributors of S1’s Postilion in a number of countries after the arrival of ACI, including Indonesia and the Philippines. In fact, a first Indonesian taker for Authentic was gained in the early part of 2013 (see below), with first deals in the Philippines touted for around the same time. Alford said the partnerships were stemming in part from Alaric knocking on the doors of the partners and in part from approaches the other way. The Postilion user base was certainly in Alaric’s sights. In January 2013, Alford claimed that more or less every large bank in Israel, for instance, was in the market due to post- merger uncertainty, with active pipelines from this source elsewhere as well. Mobile as both companies sought a first taker of a joint mobile payments infrastructure. This would see Authentic operate on the transaction processing side, while Mistral Mobile’s Money Mobility Suite would provide the interface for mobile devices in an end-to-end solution. Andy Brown, product marketing manager at Alaric, said the offering was being marketed to mobile payments systems operators, and several joint proposals had been submitted. Asia, the Middle East and Africa were cited as the main
areas of focus for the venture. Brown suggested that whilst Europe and the US had not been ruled out, these markets were less suitable for the offering. ‘Mobile in Europe and the US is different, because there is a huge banking infrastructure, and the sorts of systems that are going into Africa, for instance, where there is very little banking, are not appropriate,’ he said. ‘We need something that is a lot more complementary to the existing internet banking services, so it is a slightly different offering we have to take to the European and American markets.’
