Origin – Trax and Sungard


Swift’s Alliance Messaging Hub (AMH), formerly Advanced Messaging Hub, offers enterprise-wide messaging support to large banks and financial institutions. It is offered on an onsite deployment. There is also availability for Linux. As mentioned, AMH originated within Trax, a Belgium-


based messaging platform developer that was acquired by Sungard in 2006, and then sold to Swift in 2010. Sungard itself was a user of AMH: its Avantgard Ecosystem Communication Service (Echos), an open network technology platform that aims to help corporates, banks and vendor systems to work in unison, is underpinned by AMH. Trax’s system was one of the newer offerings on the market


at the time of the takeover by Sungard, written in Java and rules-based, with functionality for viewing and controlling message flows. While widely installed within corporates (the likes of Fiat, Air France, Deutsche Telecom and Coca Cola), Trax had also gained some notable banking customers, including Fortis and Dexia for SEPA projects and Santander for the SEPA part of a large centralisation project, which included Microsoft’s BizTalk. In November 2007, Sungard announced the planned coming together of Trax and Sungard’s older payments messaging product, Mint (which also stemmed from an acquisition, back in 1999), to create a single payments engine. It was intended to be applied to Sungard’s Swift service bureau, at the time underpinned by Mint. The introduction of the single payments engine would entail a phased fusion of the older and newer messaging systems over a twelve month period, and this would constitute an upgrade path for the Mint user base. Within the resulting solution, Trax would be the focus for providing SEPA support and also the workflow and connectivity into the banks’ own core systems and to the outside world, including corporates and CSMs.


At the time, Mint users were assured by Sungard that they would not need to scrap any of their existing investment and

that the move was effectively ‘future-proofing’ the product. A major release was promised within the year to add integrated Swift InterAct capabilities, some additional SwiftNet services such as limited SwiftNet Funds support and Exceptions and Investigations, plus enhancements to bulk and debulking capabilities. Sungard identified the need for banks to provide higher levels of services to their corporate customers in the payments arena. Areas of focus were cited as enabling banks to provide visibility for corporates into their cash, statements and processes; mapping different message formats into SEPA formats; providing processing (such as bulking and debulking) and routing (to local and pan-European clearing houses and Target2); validity checking (including IBAN/BIC validation and AML/OFAC-type checking); and automating the exceptions and investigations process. One result was the development of a solution based on Trax, dubbed the Corporate Payment Factory, which could be white-labelled by a bank and sold to its corporate, institutional and public services customers. A culmination of internal reorganisation within Sungard, intended to bring together the many separate business units, saw the launch of its Ambit brand in May 2008. This was to encompass its retail, corporate and private banking solutions, including payments and messaging. By now Sungard already had some of the integration pieces in place and Ambit, to a large extent, encapsulated and built on these. A few months later Sungard unveiled the Ambit Messaging Hub (AMH), which was a fleshed out version of the Trax offering. This Trax/Ambit solution was now positioned as the clear flagship for the company and would be pushed for all new sales. The new solution did not include any Mint components and the idea of a fusion of the two systems was no more. Furthermore, in 2008 came the announcement that Mint


would be sunsetted over the next five years, with its users offered AMH as an upgrade route. Commerzbank and Pictet & Cie, both long-standing Mint users, were among the early adopters of AMH.
