Product suite
Alchemy runs on IBM iSeries, with DB2. Interfaces include for Swift, SwissRoute, ACH, RTGS, credit card, electronic banking, Bank of England, OFAC, World-Check, World Compliance, Topaz Trace, core banking systems and reconciliation systems. The Alchemy Payment Processing Suite is meant to automate the processing cycle end-to-end for all domestic and international payments, enabling banks to service, post and fulfil a payment order straight-through with little or no manual intervention. The payments that a bank can automate with Alchemy include all internal payments, according to the supplier, plus internet originated payments, domestic wires, cheque and draft printing, credit card processing, Swift and integration with international wires sent via a correspondent bank’s own electronic banking system.
Alchemy Global Internet Banking is a multi-currency, multi-lingual internet banking solution, providing integration with the Alchemy Payment Suite via STP and a security framework. Consolidated portfolio and cash management facilities are also provided. An example user is Van Lanschot Bankiers (Curacao), which selected this in 2008. The SwissRoute Service Bureau enables banks of all sizes to
send and receive Swift payment messages. It has been created in partnership with Zurich-based BBP. BBP operates the world’s largest Swift regulated service bureau. Users include Caye Bank in Belize and Giro Bank in Curacao. Topaz Trace allows banks to monitor, detect, investigate
and report any suspicious employee or customer activity. Know your customer (KYC) transactional analysis and controls ensure client profiles are compliant from account opening through all types of banking activities. Every query performed through Topaz Trace triggers a process that consists of four stages: monitoring of customer activities, detection of unusual or unexpected operations, investigation based on the pattern of the customer’s activities and reporting of results.

SMART Nostro Automated Reconciliations enables banks
to reconcile all of their nostro, vostro and internal accounts, handling the matching of partial and complete items where appropriate. It is based on the SwallowTech products. Tie-ups obviously play an important role in IBIS’s strategic
direction. As well as the aforementioned relationships with BBP, Top Systems and SwallowTech, other partnerships include Swift, Euronet, Datasphere, Quadrant Software, IBM and Worldcheck. Alchemy has also been interfaced with a number of core systems, such as those of Topaz (via Postspaarbank – see below), Jack Henry, Datapro, Fiserv, ERI and Fidelity. Clark Russel, CEO of IBIS, stated that this was an important part of the expansion strategy, saying ‘it’s an opportunity to make the company as well as the product grow’. Aside from its traditional market in the Caribbean, IBIS has moved into Central America. Up to mid-2009, work was done to redesign the interfaces to make them multi-lingual, although by this point Alchemy had been in use by banks in Venezuela and Suriname for a few years. Indeed, Russel counted most of the banks in Suriname as clients. Panama and Belize were the latest areas of focus, with a couple of deals being picked up in the latter, if not yet the former. These included British Caribbean Banking Group (BCB), made up of three banks (see below). Belize Bank, one of its constituents, is the largest bank in Belize. On the product side, IBIS in 2009 was working to leverage its
existing relationship with BBP to offer Alchemy on an ASP basis. The idea of this was to make the product more accessible to small and medium sized banks. IBIS was also in the pilot phase of testing a new module for mobile payments. Russel stated that this would include the functionality to make any payment from a mobile phone, rather than the usual functionality of mobile payments which is restricted to a transfer between accounts belonging to the same individual, and sometimes bill pay. This was in response to customer demand, he said.
