It is pitched at banks that plan a gradual IT transformation or want to revamp a specific business line. It was also touted as suitable as ‘a value proposition’ for direct banking entities, as Thaler already had a good track-record in this field, with users such as Rabobank’s online banking arm, Rabobank IDB, ABN Amro’s subsidiary, Moneyou, and Aegon’s direct banking start-up, Knab. A relatively small German core banking system supplier, COR&FJA, was added in November 2013, bringing around 100 staff and expected to act as a catalyst for increased core banking system activity in the country. On a much larger scale is the proposed coming together of


Sopra with another major French IT services company, Steria. Announced in early April 2014, it was touted as a friendly tie- up and, indeed, a counter bid for Steria from Atos was rejected later in the month. From a payments systems perspective,


Steria saw a buy-out of its payments division back in 2003, to form Sterci (now owned by Bottomline Technologies) and there does not look to be significant overlap. In July 2016, Sopra Steria was chosen as the digital partner for ‘The Services Family’ – a new UK military challenger bank that extends full financial services to the military, the armed forces personnel, veterans and their families. Sopra Steria managed service solution in conjunction with the Sopra Banking Software, will provide banking digital solutions to the customers of the bank. In November 2016, Sopra Banking Software announced its acquisition of Cassiopae MEA joint venture, increasing its stake from 45% to 100%. The acquisition is expected to boost Sopra’s strategy in key focus areas of Africa and the Middle East.


User experiences


A fairly large-scale user of Evolan Payments is La Banque de la Poste, for all SEPA and domestic payments, across a large number of outlets and other channels, including online banking. The corporate banking part of Natixis, part of BPCE, has Evolan Payments solely for SEPA, alongside an existing local payments platform. A more recent taker is BNP Paribas Personal Finance, what was Cetolan. As well as its own processing, it handles that of others, including competitors, Carrefour and AXA Financement. BNP PF needed to support SCTs and SDDs. There were ten competitors in the original selection, including Clear2Pay, CSC and Logica. It signed in October 2011. On the card side, Sopra claims to process more than 60 per


cent of card transactions, across acquirers and issuers, in the French market. All of the large French banks are customers. Via Inforsud, the system has underpinned much of the French market for over 20 years. There is little outsourcing in this area in France. Atos and Monext have specialist offerings, the latter using Sopra, and some small banks and subsidiaries have outsource arrangements, but most banks have their own systems.


First Data was a relatively early user, signing for the system in the early 1990s. It has traditionally had a single installation in Bratislava to support its processing for third-party banks. It uses the full suite of functions within Sopra’s suite apart from dispute management. The Bratislava-based system supports the 70 customer banks, which span 20 countries. Of late, First Data has been setting up a centre in Germany to support

larger customers. This will also use the Sopra platform. The first customer of this, National Australia Bank (NAB) for its UK subsidiary banks, was due to cut-over in the second half of 2011. The prepaid card part of NAB’s business was migrating from Fidelity’s Nomad-derived service. There have been other international customers over the years, including in central and eastern Europe (BGZ in Poland was one example) but these have fallen away, often due to mergers and acquisitions. The system is used by French banks for processing for their international operations, including in a few parts of Africa (including Cameroon) and central and eastern Europe. This has brought the need to have local interfaces, such as for French Polynesia, where the system needs to link to Visa, Mastercard and American Express in Australia. Société Générale is a major international user, including for its sizeable central European subsidiary banks and for other units, such as consumer finance.


At home, the system is central to a number of card initiatives, such as a joint venture between Société Générale and La Banque Postale and another involving BNP Paribas (and now also Fortis and the Italian portion of the group, BNL) and Caisse d’Epargne. The SocGen/La Banque Postale project has been a phased one, with the first transactions processed in 2009. SocGen moved across its contract and offer management in early 2011, with La Banque Postale due to do the same around one year later. In September 2016, Sopra Banking Software signed a


letter of intention with PW Consultants for the development and distribution of Talk to Pay, Sopra’s universal solution specialising in securing electronic payments.
