Overview


Although a household name for personal computing, like any other large technology company Microsoft also supports solutions tailored to industry verticals, and financial services is no exception. Microsoft products are in all financial institutions, whether on the desktop, in the server room or in business applications. However as relates to payments, Microsoft is a relative newcomer. Although Microsoft technology has supported vendor applications since the 1990s, it is only in the last decade or so that the company has ventured into payment processing.


Strengths


• Clearly, size, reach, R&D resources etc. • Strong partnerships with other application providers, third parties and industry bodies.


• A few geographical strongholds, including Spain.


Weaknesses


• Payments and financial messaging isn’t a core area. • Low profile in this space. • Relatively small number of well-known and often repeated references.


Product suite


By 2004, Microsoft was making it clear that it viewed international payments as a key sector for growth – the company was understandably keen to increase its footprint at the enterprise server level and saw the rapid pace of change within the payments arena as an ideal opportunity to do this, with the chance to crack both corporate treasury and bank data centres. Microsoft’s enterprise payment approach was based on its BizTalk Server. This enterprise application integration (EAI) product was released in 2000 and, as were most EAI tools, it was initially aimed at ERP applications in the corporate environment. Its thrust was to support multiple standards and insulate legacy systems in both banks and corporates. BizTalk was a key component at the time within the corporate interconnectivity RosettaNet pilots, in its Accelerator for Swift (A4 Swift) form. The RosettaNet pilots mostly involved hooking into SAP systems, although Microsoft claimed that BizTalk could also support any ERP and CRM offerings including Oracle. BizTalk also provides integration to the Microsoft Office suite of products such as Excel and SharePoint Server.


The BizTalk Server engine is positioned as a payments


integration framework, as opposed to a solution package. A4 Swift Accelerator releases were planned to meet the needs of corporate, banking and capital markets customers. In keeping with Microsoft’s industry strategy, payments- specific services are delivered by Microsoft’s application and integration partners, including the option of embedding BizTalk with partner solutions. The BizTalk Server forms the core of payments integration and manages connectivity and transaction flows among the payment applications found in a banking environment. While Microsoft technology is used to underpin several payments vendors and service bureaux, for example EastNets, Bankserv and Singapore-based NEC subsidiary, Decillion, the company has also had payment solution partnerships with specific application providers, such as Fundtech and Postilion (now part of ACI). BizTalk Server is also the basis for building solutions for Business Process Management (BPM), EAI, Business- to-Business (B2B) applications and SOA. It provides an integration platform, using various messaging formats such as XML, flat file, EDI, and Swift, plus a variety of transport mechanisms, such as HTTP(S), SOAP, web services, FTP and
