THERE SEEMS TO BE A RATHER PARADOXICAL outlook in our sector at the moment: uncertainty alongside confidence. Risk management is currently a hot topic, discussed at the ITM annual conference (p16) and ACTE’s recent one-day event in London (p12). And risk is the theme for


BBT’s travel buyer forum on May 15: we’ll be debating a range of aspects from travel policy to reputational and financial risk. The reasons for uncertainty are obvious: we’re seeing dangerous geopolitical turmoil on our TVs and online news alerts every day. But this focus also indicates a subtle sea-change in confidence: today, we’re not just debating cuts and savings. Of course, cost is still crucial: travel managers still want maximum bang-for-buck – even in the VIP world of Premier League football (p44). But increasingly, industry talk is more about investing: in travel technology and security, in the travellers and in growth. Our ROI feature (p52) explores the dynamic approach of gauging the value of travel programmes rather than just the cost, while our UK 50 Leading TMCs guide (p57) notes combined sales in 2014 up nearly 5 per cent, while half those TMCs anticipate 10 per cent-plus sales growth this year. Sadly, not everything in the UK inspires such confidence.


My report from Singapore (p114) sees the state-of-the-art, 24/7-operating Changi airport pressing ahead with plans for a vast new terminal and third runway. Back in Blighty, the Davies Commission recommendations are due soon, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve completed those projects in Singapore by the time we’ve even broken ground at Heathrow or Gatwick. On a happier note, unbelievably it’s almost time to start thinking about the 2016 Business Travel Awards (how did that happen?).
