ITM UPDATE SIMONE BUCKLEY

Simone Buckley Chief executive, Institute of Travel & Meetings (ITM)

Nemesis – lured him to a river where he saw his reflection in the water for the first time. He was so struck by his own beauty that he was unable to prise himself away from the water’s edge. He eventually fell in and drowned. Had Narcissus been around today he would undoubtedly be strutting about town with a selfie stick, posting an endless stream of photos on social media. We are, according to many academics, part of the ‘look-at-me generation’. And many of us can be guilty of temporary bouts of narcissism from time- to-time. How many of us check-in on Facebook or Twitter at the airport terminal? Who posts endless pictures from business trips to New York, Milan or Paris? Some people may call it sharing, but we’re basically saying: “Look at me! Look where I am! Aren’t I special?” Those of you who spend more time than you probably should on social media sites may have noticed a recent surge in mid-air posts.

REFLECTED GLORY N

As I write this column, a Facebook friend of mine is telling followers: “Facetiming mum on way to Romania…LOL.” What’s she’s really saying is: “Look at me, I’m on a plane and it has wifi!” These types of post will become more ubiquitous as airlines increase investment in in-flight technology. Finnair is the latest carrier to confirm plans to roll out wifi across its fleet. Vanity aside, what does this mean for business travellers? As onboard connectivity proliferates, and gets faster and cheaper (as it will inevitably do), are companies going to expect them to work mid-flight? I say any boss thinking of introducing such a thing to travel policy ought to have a good, hard look in the mirror...

WE ALL LIKE TO SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA – BUT HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

arcissus was beautiful – and he knew it. But the young hunter from Greek mythology hacked off the menfolk with his acute vanity and the goddess of divine retribution – who happened to be called
