Interactive SIS - GREYHOUND RACING

UK greyhound racing showing its teeth by going global

Despite the closure of one of the UK’s most famous dog tracks, it’s an exciting time for greyhound racing as it enjoys a surge in popularity across the globe says SIS’s Paul Witten

When Wimbledon Stadium shut its doors for the final time in March this year, the closure of one of greyhound racing’s most iconic venues was a sad day for everyone associated with the sport. Home to the English Greyhound Derby until 2016, the old track played host to some truly memorable moments in the sport’s history and will never be forgotten.

Paul Witten became commercial director for SIS, the worldwide leader for broadcast and data services in betting retail and online, in August 2014. He is responsible for enhancing the company’s retail betting products including video and data delivery.

Prior to SIS, Witten worked at German lottery provider Tipp24, where he developed key global relationships, particularly in the public sector. He has more than 10 years’ experience in the betting and gaming industry, including more than five years in eCommerce, mobile and eGaming with Ladbrokes, and four years at Betfair where he rose to the role of Director of Football.

Having worked initially in sales, Witten is also experienced in advertising, playing a role in the emergence of eBay’s fledgling UK business.

But as one chapter ends, another begins. While UK greyhound racing leaves the London suburb, the popularity of the sport continues to grow around the world. Tere is a clear appetite for the sport from punters and operators alike, certainly from operators that we have been talking to recently. It all makes for an exciting time for greyhound racing as it enters new territories for the first time and opens itself up to new audiences.

Trough several new commercial deals, SIS is now distributing greyhound racing from the UK and Ireland via streaming, to several new territories, expanding the sport’s international footprint as a result. Many global operators are appreciating the premium product and content we offer through our low latency streaming service, SIS Stream.

Irish greyhounds to their online and retail customers in February. It’s already proved hugely popular in Australia, with the UK version of the sport becoming one of Tabcorp’s most popular international products to date.

Of course, greyhound racing already has a strong heritage in Australia so its success may not come as a surprise to some, but when you take into account the time difference between UK events taking place in Australia, with some occurring in the early hours of the morning, it’s an impressive feat.

Te UK sport is also proving to be an attractive proposition for territories perhaps less synonymous with greyhound racing. Trough an agreement with TopBetta Holdings Limited, its subsidiary Te Global Tote (TGT) now distributes live UK and Ireland greyhound racing and Te Global Tote odds services to international bookmakers for their punters around the world.

From Eastern Europe to Central Asia and South Africa, it’s clear that greyhound racing is proving popular, as operators from across the globe are keen to snap up live streamed greyhound racing.

And the closure of Wimbledon by no means spells the end for greyhound racing on these
