SPAIN – APEX gaming has signed an agreement with Spanish distributor Comatel at the Fería del Juego in Madrid, with Comatel displaying a wide range of APEX machines on its stand in Madrid.

“APEX gaming has so much to offer the Spanish market. From our initial discussions last year, we immediately saw the potential. That is why we conducted an extended trial in the VLT market. The results have been excellent and we are very excited about the future for APEX in Spain”, stated Fidel Molina, CEO of Comatel.

Comatel was founded in 1990 by Fidel Molina to provide improved service and choice to the Spanish arcade and bar gaming market. Today Comatel is one of the largest distributors of gaming machines in Spain. The headquarters are based in Valencia with subsidiaries in Madrid, Sevilla and Zaragoza.

“Testing and homologation are complete. Now is the time that Comatel can bring APEX into the Spanish market,” added Johannes Weissengruber, Chairman and founder of APEX gaming.

SOUTH AFRICA – Sun International opened its Time Square Casino in Menyln Maine on April 1 with 60 tables and 2,000 slots along with 18 new restaurants and bars. The next phase of the project will see a state-of-the-art Arena with 8,500 seats, with the venue officially complete in November, followed by phase three, next year with the Maslow Time Square hotel.

The casino has become the second biggest in the country. Its opening follows the publication of Sun’s latest financial figures. Sun International grew its revenue by an impressive 31 per cent to R7.7bn in the second half of 2016, with the strong growth attributable to the inclusion of Dreams S.A. and GPI Slots’ operations for the full period. EBITDA increased by 24 per cent, however on a comparable basis it decreased by 12 per cent.

South African revenue continued to be impacted by difficult trading conditions and reduced consumer spend. Excluding revenue from GPI Slots, comparable revenue was flat on the back of lower casino revenues. Sun City and the Table Bay continued to benefit from an increase in international tourism which helped boost rooms revenue by 14 per cent. Growth in Chile slowed over the six months with Sun Dreams’ revenue up one per cent in local currency. Monticello was impacted by the relocation of the toll road to the Santiago side of Monticello, making it more costly to reach the property, whilst Iquique, which is located in a copper mining region, was impacted by the weak copper price.

New rules which allow for electronic bingo terminals in Portugal have been released by the Ministry of Economy.

Going into force on April 13, the rules outline how electronic bingo terminals may be installed and operated. According to the preamble of the new law changes were necessary in order “to keep pace with technological developments and invest in the modernisation of bingo gaming operations through the use of modern tools offered by new technologies.”

Te new rules state that electronic bingo terminals may only be installed “in a separate room or room independent of the room from where traditional bingo is practiced, with the sound insulation necessary so that its operation does not disturb the running of the traditional bingo room.” In addition the number of electronic bingo terminals may not be more than half of the number of the positions set up in the traditional bingo hall.

Acquisitions drive 20 per cent growth for France’s SFC

France

Te Société Française de Casinos (SFC) grew by more than 20 per cent in 2016 due to mergers and acquisitions. It described the year as ‘an intense exercise in terms of external growth with the acquisition of five casinos.’

Consolidated sales amounted to €22m up 20.8 per cent, but with the group’s portfolio increasing from four to nine venues, any comparison with previous results is complicated. Te SFC bought 100 per cent of the capital of the casino of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and 47 per cent of the capital of the casino of Capvern during the financial year.

Te activity of the latter acquired at the end of the financial year will only be reflected in the consolidated financial statements as of

60 per cent of revenue minus tax will be awarded in prizes compared with 55 per cent for traditional bingo. Crucially the new law also allows operators to offer a national prize pool and states that bingo terminals may be part of a linked network.

Operators will initially be able to form a prize fund with a lump sum made up of €100,000. After that time the accumulated bingo prize will be made up from €0.50 from the prizes awarded for each game.

Te new law was developed after consultation with the Portuguese Association of Bingos Associação Portuguesa de Bingos, and unions representing workers in the sector.

Tere are currently 16 bingo halls in Portugal. Nine are owned and run by local sports clubs and one bingo hall is located in a casino. Five are located in capital Lisbon, two in Porto while the rest are located throughout Portugal.

November 1, 2016. Te Group also acquired a 49 per cent stake in Société Franco-Belge de Casinos (SFBC) Controlled jointly with the Belgian Ardent-Circus Group of casinos, which holds the balance of the capital. SFBC acquired 100 per cent of the casinos of Port-Leucate, Briançon and Carnac respectively in January, March and September 2016.

At the start of the year the group operated casinos in Châtel-Guyon, Port-la- Nouvelle, Gruissan and Collioure. It also obtained the public service delegation of the casino of Bagnères-de- Luchon, which is expected to open this year. SFC added: “Adjusted EBITDA rose by 28.7 per cent to € 2.2m, benefiting from a strong performance and the positive contribution of the new casinos, particularly those of Port Leucate and Chamonix. Tis has allowed the group to absorb structure costs. In the second half of 2017, the group will open the casino of Bagnères-de-Luchon, the licence it bought last year.”
