Ten came the Gulf War which saw tourism drop and by 1992 the hotels saw low occupancies and low average room rates. A new government in 1992 brought a turnaround. Firstly the government decided it would no longer be in the hotel business (after owning several hotels) whilst the Ministry of Tourism was revamped with the aim of ‘transforming the quality of the product’.

So in 1994 the Resorts International Paradise Island hotel was sold to Sun International and this property was transformed. Te government’s other hotels followed suit and were also sold and big investors moved in and began to upgrade and rebuild.
