When the PLP came into power in 2012, Prime Minister Christie initiated plans again to regulate the web shops and held a referendum to determine the will of the people to regulate these shops and also establish a national lottery.


Although the public voted against both these l1


suggestions and although the Prime Minister claimed he would abide by the referendum, he changed his mind and instead announced he would regulate and tax the web shops although didn’t permit a national lottery to be set up.


Te government said at the time that the web shops generated around $600m gross annual revenue and given this figure it seemed important to tax it whilst also protecting the consumer.

Both of these services in an unregulated situation could cause major problems. Some 4,000 people are employed by the web shops also – a factor the government also took into consideration.

Junkanoo street parades are the main festival in the Bahamas and see dance troupes and musicians parading through the streets in vibrant costumes. The liveliest and largest of the Junkanoo party parades takes place in the capital, Nassau.
