Mark Corcoran of ABC said that drones are now used in news gathering, an example of how a new tool is used in the effort to minimize risks. However, he said in using emerging and new technology, the issues such as ethics and privacy have to be addressed.
In the session on Improving Access to Crucial Information, Stephanie Hannon of Google said information relayed through the social media network must be accurate, relevant, credible, timely, and above all it must be accessible.
She said that the social media is an important partner in disaster reporting as it uses history and timeline to tell a story.
“The Internet is a powerful tool when it is still working,” she added.
Other panel members for this session were Charles Dharapak of the Associated Press (AP), George Haddow of Bullock & Haddow LLC, a disaster management consulting firm, and Tomoe Makino of Twitter Japan.
Dharapak of AP said that the mainstream media do follow the social media in disaster coverage.
However he said, “verification of information found in social media is crucial for everyone in disaster reporting.”
Haddow of Bullock & Haddow said that in times of emergency, timely and accurate information is vital and it is important for all parties involved to form partnerships.
Makino of Twitter Japan said that it is important for social media to live harmoniously with the traditional media.
