ABU Copyright Committee Meeting – New Delhi

he ABU Copyright Committee Meeting, hosted by Doordarshan, Prasar Bharati met in New Delhi, India on 25 March 2015. The meeting brought together
members from the Asia-Pacific region to discuss on critical issues pertaining to broadcasters in the digital economy.
International delegates and members who joined the meeting were welcomed by Mr Jawhar Sircar, the CEO of Prasar Bharati who is also the Vice President of the ABU. Mr Sircar, in his opening remarks stated that copyright issues are often ignored and very few members are informed of or understand its importance. He said this ignorance in the face of blatant misappropriation that is present was an alarming situation. He emphasized on the importance of more work to be done in the area of copyright.
Dr Surya Prakash, the Chairman of Prasar Bharati and guest of honor for the opening ceremony welcomed all the members and emphasized on the importance of discussing the issues of copyright in the digital era. ABU Secretary General, Dr Javad Mottaghi in his remarks thanked Mr Sircar for hosting this event and for his continued support to the Union’s activities. He reinstated the importance of IP knowledge and broadcasters updating their laws in accordance to the changing digital technologies. He invited members to send in suggestions and recommendations for conducting future events.

The discussion of the meeting was focused on the Broadcasters Treaty. Members elaborated on their positions in reference to the SCCR Broadcasters Treaty document 27/2, including the position of other member countries. Ms Premila Manvi, the Legal Officer of the ABU encouraged members
