Interview
TRT to Play More Active Role in ABU
The new Director General of Turkey’s public broadcaster, Mr Şenol Göka talks to ABU News about the challenges ahead and why TRT wants to strengthen its relations with the broadcasting unions.
TRT will be hosting the 2015 ABU General Assembly and its Associated Meetings in October in Istanbul. What is TRT’s role in regional and international cooperation among broadcasters and in particular TRT’s outstanding partnership with the ABU? TRT is one of the leading public broadcasters in Europe and Asia. TRT’s experience in broadcasting, its facilities and relations are the factors that bring TRT into prominence. TRT, in many ways, serves as a bridge within the geography it belongs. Therefore, TRT, occasionally organizing trainings and events, is doing its best to duly perform its duty.
In the future, TRT, worthily of its current active position, will play an effective role within the unions which it’s a member of. It is the common wish of not only the TRT administration but also these unions for TRT, having an administrative
mentality and structure prone to making pioneering technical and content related moves, to play an active role in the international arena.
TRT, with its experience, should be an international training centre in the field of broadcasting.
TRT is known for its quality multicultural content in programming. In this respect it is similar to the multidimensional working environment of the ABU and its members. In your views, what role broadcasters can play to create a better understanding and tolerance among various groups of audiences and societies? Media, in its lexical meaning, means “a tool and a medium” as well as a “platform”. So media is a platform which contains all kinds of diversity and using the facilities of this platform it responds to the various demands of the public opinion in the best possible way. Turkey has a cultural wealth which is represented by TRT.
TRT has been able to immensely increase its service to Turkish audiences over the past few years. What more is in your future planning? TRT, as a public broadcaster, is preparing itself to meet the demands of the public in every aspect. Making access to the TRT archives available for researchers and those concerned and also opening our music archives for the private channels (Radio-TV) are important steps taken to this end.
The forthcoming period will witness major advances in terms of Radio broadcasting as well as TV broadcasting. Similar to the launching of the 4K era in TV, the dynamic RDSs in radio and special announcement radio broadcasting targeted at small regions should be viewed as indispensable initiatives by TRT. Specific radio broadcasting targeted at major cities is also one of the applications that will be mentioned most often in the upcoming future.
