World Radio Day 2015 A
BU joined hands with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) last February for the
celebration of the World Radio Day. Pakistan, India, Malaysia and Nepal were among the Asian countries which participated actively in various activities to mark this special day.
World Radio Day which is celebrated each year on February 13, was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2011. It seeks to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information and enhance networking among broadcasters.
This year, the main theme of this special
event was ‘Youth and Innovation’. The EBU in collaboration with United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) organised various events at its premises in Geneva to mark the World Radio Day. Two days prior to the special day, a Digital Radio Summit gathered more than one hundred experts of radio from all over Europe, including representatives from WorldDMB, Digital Radio Mondiale, RadioDNS and TISA.
Radio Hack 2015 was also organised and was dedicated to software engineers specialized in applications
for radio. Two other events were World Radio dedicated to Youth and Innovation and a WRD Relay around the globe.
The ABU Secretariat contacted 32 ABU members with radio-stations to invite them to participate and linked them with the EBU coordinators. At the end 11 ABU members took part at this very exciting event celebrating the power of radio.
