Asiavision Targets Ending Satellite Feed by June

A

siavision, the daily television news exchange program of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting

Union (ABU), has set the target of ending its satellite feed by June. This was announced at the 2015 ABU News Group Meeting in Sendai, Japan. So, members will use solely the file-based online platform from 1 July.

The News Group is the decision-making body for Asiavision (AVN). The News Group Meeting on 14 March was hosted by NHK. A total of 43 delegates from 23 AVN members attended the meeting. This decision was reached during the closed session of the meeting. The AVN Centre would liaise with all members to find out if any member had problems in using the online platform and to offer technical assistance if required.

The ending of the satellite feed would result in savings for the AVN Centre from having to pay for the satellite space and for members contributing via satellite they too will save from having to pay for their own uplink costs.

Currently, only seven members contribute to the news exchange via satellite while the online platform, introduced in 2009, is accessible to all AVN members and is used by the majority.

A survey conducted ahead of the News Group Meeting showed that
